Message from the Vice Chancellor

Prof. Lughano Kusiluka, Vice Chancellor – Mzumbe University

Prof. Lughano Kusiluka,
Vice Chancellor – Mzumbe University

As we receive the third cohort students at Mzumbe University, it is my pleasure to commend the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) for the distinctive initiative in designing the Master of Research and Public Policy (MRPP) programme to advance research excellence for governance and public policy in Africa. The launching of this programme in 2014/2015 demonstrated that a better way of doing things can be found through joint efforts. We are proud of having a programme that has been developed by a team of multidisciplinary experts from twelve universities in nine African countries and run using a common curriculum and methodology.

Of particular interest to me is the delivery approach of the programme, where a number of participatory approaches are used to enhance knowledge and skill acquisition. This is an important turning point where we have recognized the fact that the traditional instructor-centred approaches such as lecture have a limited chance for producing independent thinkers and analysts. Besides, the continuous capacity building, staff and student mobility facilitated by PASGR signal to me that the programme will realize its vision and mission.

Mzumbe University has become one of the first universities in this collaboration to produce the first batch of graduands. I was delighted to see that 11 out of the 14 students who were admitted into the MRPP programme in October 2014 were among the 3562 graduands for the MU’s 15th graduation ceremony held on 2nd December 2016. In this academic year, our expectations are even higher, as we have 23 MRPP students who have completed their coursework and are now writing their dissertations. This is a remarkable milestone given the fact that MRPP is only three years old. Once again, I thank PASGR and all those who made this possible. I wish the MRPP staff and students all the best in their academic work.

Message from the Programme Coordinator

Dr. Orest Sebastian Masue, MRPP Coordinator, Mzumbe University

Dr. Orest Sebastian Masue,
MRPP Coordinator, Mzumbe University

The Master of Research and Public Policy (MRPP) programme which kicked off at Mzumbe University in October 2014 has stimulated the spirit of interactive teaching and learning through the use of a combination of innovative approaches. These include role plays, group work and presentations, field experience and e-cases. The participatory nature of the programme has particularly inculcated to students the culture of independence, confidence and interaction in the process of knowledge and skill acquisition and transfer.

As we celebrate the successful graduation of 11 graduates from the first cohort of 14 students who were enrolled in October 2014, I am sure that as we go along the programme will impact the pedagogical approach at our university and produce graduates who are able to utilize research evidence in public policy development for the betterment of our country. I commend the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR), staff and students for furthering the MRPP mission.
